Moving day arrived before we became grandparents rocking into the late 21st c.
Reclaimed wood is uniquely varied in its sources, species and surface qualities; and suppliers that work with the material range from large modern millworks to one person producers. Despite and because of this, reclaimed woods do not carry an industry grading standard. This session will provide an overview of the most commonly found woods that are salvaged from 19th and 20th c. structures. In this review, architects will be able to share with clients and project teams an understanding of the material, from its origins in an old growth forest through it’s transformations to the present; learning how to reliably assess the value, performance, and aesthetics of the woods for a range of building and design applications.
- Identify the most common reclaimed wood types that are salvaged and remanufactured from deconstructed structures, and made available for architectural applications.
- Calculate the average square foot costs of a reclaimed wood product for specific building applications, given an area to be covered, and the expected waste factors.
- Assess the grades of reclaimed woods, and their appropriateness for the performance, sustainability and aesthetic goals of a project; and that are unique to a natural, salvaged and re-manufactured wood that does not otherwise carry an industry grading standard.
- Relate knowledge to clients on the growth, harvesting, recovery and re-manufacturing process of reclaimed wood products, and it’s influences for a project.
