Net Zero is an illusive goal, but from a total project standpoint, it comes closer with reclaimed woods. Reclaimed is passive in ways that are both apparent and don’t meet the eye. How do they connect? The common ground is a low carbon footprint, or at least the goal of it – even as they come at it from completely different directions.
Reclaimed woods are often sourced and milled locally; and of course they don’t require the use of living trees. Those benefits seem clear, even if hard to calculate on a case-by-case basis – and they happen before installation. Passive House take off after installation.
Reclaimed woods can continue to clock time in the carbon savings department, but the engine room is not in the basement. If there are future benefits, they would need to come from the human mind and heart.
